nina_vendredi: (That'll give you bees)

(no subject)

My dad has apparently decided to become a beekeeper.

My step-mom is lamenting that dad is spending all their money on bees. My eldest sister who moved in with them to change scenery after ditching her husband is calling dad a slave-driver for making her clear brush. I'm the asshole encouraging this endeavor, not because he has any particular skill in it, but because the bee industry is on the verge of collapse and the demand for honey is just going to go up with the backlash against HFCS.

This also means that dad has promised to send me homebrew mead.

Someone really needs to make a sitcom about your family.

Yeah, we really should only exist in fiction. Also, how messed up is my family when I'm probably the straight man?

That second sentence is hilarious for so many reasons. Also? OMFG YOUR ICON. "It's the hardest part of my job. ...I THINK!"

I always meant to do more of these.

Homebrew mead is a good reason to encourage someone to do pretty much anything. Also, tell your sister my husband used to hay all summer. IT COULD BE WORSE.

Seriously, he ventured into homebrew booze a couple of years ago to have something to do with all his oranges (he bought a small grove for his retirement to Florida) and then added leechee, cactus, and a couple other kinds of citrus as he kept planting. So as soon as he told me he bought bees, I was all "you need to make mead" and he said, "I already did, it's delicious".

He's also got a still for when his liqueurs don't turn out, but that's another family story altogether.

That's awesome.

I bet it is.

Having just sampled homebrew mead from friends who've also just become bee-keepers, I'm all for it, too!

The only downside to this (assuming he manages to keep the bees alive) is that we're on opposite sides of the country and I have to convince him to ship things out.
