nina_vendrediI'm working on a series of fics retelling the Journey to the West/Saiyuki story as if it were folklore and fairy tales from around the world. I'm hoping to get around to doing four more.)

Long ago, Earth fell in love with Sun.
Now Earth’s people tried to tell her that she and Sun were too different. He was too hot, and his temper was bad. He needed a wife that was just as hot, or better yet, cold, like Moon. Earth should marry Water, for Water could give her a good home. Earth knew she would have a better home with Water, but she still loved Sun, and needed to know if he loved her too.
Earth knew many things about magic, so she made a monkey out of stone. She told Monkey to go find Sun and tell him that she loved him, and ask if Sun could love her too. She forgot that even though Monkey was made of stone, he was still a monkey. Monkey got himself into so much trouble that the gods had to come out of the sky to scold him.
It was eventually decided that Cicada should keep an eye on Monkey. Monkey continued to make mischief in the sky too, until Cicada and his friends realized that Monkey could never live in the sky and decided to leave the sky and take Monkey back to Earth.
Earth was sad when she found out that Monkey never asked Sun if she loved her, and that he still didn’t know that she loved him. But she invited Cicada and his friends to stay in her household, and honored her people’s wishes and married Water.
Earth and Water had many children together, and their people became strong. Cicada and his friends stayed in Earth and Water’s household and were brave warriors for them. As time passed no one could defeat Earth and Water’s kingdom, though many tried.
