Playing Pokie 2 of 2

After about an hour of play, Tenpou was surprised to find that Kenren was right, Goku had really caught on quickly. He didn’t win many hands, but the marshal chalked that up to bad luck and inexperience. However, he was learning his shapes and numbers and all the face cards rather well, and Tenpou was a little distraught to find that Goku could actually learn something from their bad habits. It just didn’t sit well with him. Thankfully Goku still needed a little help placing bets.

“How many cards do you want, Tenpou?” Kenren asked, cigarette perched between his lips.

“Just one off the top,” Tenpou responded, placing his discard on the table.

“One it is. How ‘bout you, Goku?”

“Um…” Goku mumbled while staring at his cards, focusing extra hard on his hand, before finally replying, “two, I think.”

“Two for the little man. Dealer will hold where he is. Tenpou, I believe the best is yours.”

Tenpou studied his hand, he had not received the card that would have completed his straight flush, but he was pretty sure he could bluff his way past his opponents.

“In for ten,” he stated, throwing two chips into the pot.

“Goku?”

The young boy stared at his chips, “What do I say if I think I can win?”

“What, you mean like going all in?” Kenren asked, suspiciously.

“Yeah, that!” Goku chirped happily, pushing all his chips into the pot.

Kenren laughed, “You’re a crazy little monkey. I’ll call. Tenpou?”

The marshal tossed his cards to the table, “Fold.”

Kenren looked at Goku, “Shall we reveal our hands at the same time?”

“OK,” agreed Goku.

The two stared at each other for a moment before slowly laying their hands on the table. Tenpou watched as the smile rose on Kenren’s lips as the general revealed his full house, Queens full of sevens. The smile however, did not last long as both officers realized Goku’s hand: four Tens, Ace high for good measure.

“Aw, damn it.” Kenren exclaimed, looking down at his chips which had been reduced to a handful after the large bet.

“Well done Goku,” Tenpou said, smiling.

“Thank you Ten-chan!” Goku replied happily as he pulled the large mound of chips towards his side of the table.

With a grunt, Kenren got up from the table.

“Had enough, Kenren?”

“No,” Kenren grumbled, “I’m just going to see if one of the majors will lone me some money. I’ll be back.”

With that, Kenren exited Tenpou’s quarters and the marshal couldn’t help but laugh.

“Did I do a good job, Ten-chan?” Goku asked enthusiastically.

“You did great Goku,” Tenpou responded, still smiling. “Just remember, our deal. You can’t tell Ken-nii-chan that I taught you to play poker a couple weeks ago.”

“Don’t worry, I wont!” Goku replied, smiling from ear to ear.
